Dr. Yang Yung-Ching (1891–1956) was a notable Chinese statesman and educator, recognized as the first Chinese president of Soochow University (his alma mater). Born in Wuxi, Jiangsu, he graduated from Soochow University in 1910 and Tsinghua Imperial College in 1913. He further studied in the U.S., earning degrees in political science, international law, and law at the University of Wisconsin and George Washington University. Yang served as private secretary to Dr. V. K. Wellington Koo and took part in major international conferences such as the 1919 International Labor Conference, 1920 League of Nations Assembly, and the 1921-22 Washington Naval Conference. After returning to China, he worked in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and served as consul-general in London. In 1927, he became president of Soochow University, leading its localization and expansion despite wartime challenges. He resigned in 1952 due to educational reforms and died in 1956, leaving a legacy in Chinese diplomacy and education modernization.
