Benjamin Wong-Tape (1875–1967), a Chinese merchant born in New Zealand, was a significant figure in commerce and public service in Hong Kong and New Zealand during the early 20th century. Born in Dunedin to immigrant parents, he expanded his family’s trading business in Otago and Southland despite facing anti-Chinese discrimination. Educated in New Zealand and Hong Kong, he moved permanently to Hong Kong in 1905, becoming General Manager and Regional Secretary of the Sun Life Assurance Company of Canada. As a founding member of the Hong Kong Rotary Club in 1930, Wong-Tape served as joint Club Secretary and helped establish the club under British colonial rule. He held public offices including Justice of the Peace and Urban Council member, and was awarded the OBE in 1948. Recognized for bridging Chinese and Western communities, his legacy endures in historical accounts from both New Zealand and Hong Kong.
