Rotary in Taiwan, formerly Formosa, began under Japanese rule from 1895 to 1945, with three clubs founded between 1931 and 1937 in Taihoku (Taipei), Takao (Kaohsiung), and Keelung, affiliated with Rotary Japan. These were dissolved in 1940 amid World War II tensions. After Taiwan returned to Chinese administration in 1945, Rotary was reestablished in 1948 with the founding of the Taipeh Rotary Club, led by Charter President Yen Chia-kan, who later became President of the Republic of China. By 1960, Rotary activities had grown across Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macao, leading to the formation of District 345 with 19 clubs. Early Rotary leadership in Taiwan blended local officials and international members, marking a significant chapter in the region’s Rotary history.
