Sir William Woodward Hornell (1878–1950), a Knight Bachelor and noted educator, served as the first president of the Rotary Club of Hong Kong from 1930 to 1932 while also Vice-Chancellor of the University of Hong Kong. Though recognized as “Charter President,” the club’s foundation was primarily driven by Governor Sir William Peel and Rotary International’s Honorary General Commissioner James W. Davidson during a 1930 Southeast Asia expansion mission. The Rotary Club of Hong Kong gained official Rotary International membership on 20 February 1931. During his 13 years at the University of Hong Kong (1924–1937), Hornell championed higher education and established the Chinese Studies Department, securing funding from the Boxer Indemnity and private donors. His tenure deepened academic ties with China, and he retired in 1937, remembered for elevating educational standards and fostering multicultural understanding.
