Dr. The Honourable Sir Run Run Shaw (邵逸夫爵士, 1907–2014) was a visionary Hong Kong entertainment pioneer and philanthropist. Starting in the 1920s with his brothers in Shanghai, he built Shaw Brothers Studios into a Southeast Asian film empire specializing in over 1,000 productions, especially martial arts films. In 1957, he moved to Hong Kong, founding Movietown studio and launching Television Broadcasts Limited (TVB) in 1967, which became Hong Kong’s leading free-to-air broadcaster. Knighted in 1978, Shaw also led the Hong Kong Red Cross for over 20 years and was an active Rotarian. His philanthropy through the Shaw Foundation donated billions to education, healthcare, and research in China and beyond, notably creating the Shaw Prize in 2002. Shaw’s enduring legacy shapes Asian media, culture, and humanitarian efforts, reflecting a lifelong commitment to “the benefit of humankind.”
