Revd. Dr. Robert Johnston McMullen (Hangchow) 明思德牧師 (杭州)

Revd. Dr. Robert Johnston McMullen (1884–1962) was an American Presbyterian missionary and academic who spent over 30 years in Hangchow (杭州), China. He was the founding president of the Hangchow Rotary Club (1932–1933) and led the China Red Cross in Hangchow during the Japanese occupation starting in 1937. Fluent in Chinese, McMullen was active in missionary work, education, and refugee relief during wartime hardships. He served as president of Hangchow Christian College from 1938 to 1942, managing refugee aid and negotiations with Japanese authorities to protect civilians and mission institutions. Imprisoned in a Japanese camp for seven months, he returned to the U.S. in 1943 to lead Centre College, Kentucky (1944–1946). He later served as executive secretary of the United Board for Christian Colleges in China until 1952 and briefly as a Presbyterian pastor before retiring. Throughout his life, McMullen emphasized Christian service amidst conflict and cultural change.
