Benjamin Wylie, JP (1884–1956), was a founding member and the first director of the Rotary Club of Hong Kong in 1930, working in the printing and newspaper industry. He was Managing Director and General Manager of the South China Morning Post (SCMP) and Hong Kong Telegraph in the mid-20th century. In 1919, he co-founded the Kowloon Residents’ Association, promoting urban development and political reform that resulted in improvements like Kowloon Hospital and bus services. Wylie Road in Kowloon bears his name in recognition of his philanthropy. During the Japanese occupation (1941–1945), he was interned at Stanley Internment Camp. After the war, he was instrumental in restarting the SCMP’s publication. The SCMP office was on Wyndham Street, and the British Military Hospital operated on Wylie Road from 1967 to 1996.
