Hangchow Rotary Club (1931) – The First Mandarin Speaking Club in History

The Hangchow Rotary Club, chartered on June 23, 1932, in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, was the first Mandarin-speaking Rotary Club in history. Recognized by Rotary International after Douglas C. Howland’s 1933 visit, the club transitioned from English to Chinese in its meetings to encourage local Chinese participation. Founded with 24 members, including prominent figures from the Shanghai Rotary Club like Luther M. Jee, George A. Fitch, and Dr. Fong Foo-Sec, it met at the Hangchow YMCA. The club issued a bilingual semi-monthly bulletin named “The West Lake” starting in 1935. Robert Johnston McMullen was the first president. In 1933, the club gifted Howland a Han Dynasty jade piece shaped like a Rotary wheel, symbolizing historical continuity. After World War II, the club was re-chartered in 1947, underscoring its lasting impact on Rotary history in China.
