Hangchow Rotarian Rev. Robert Johnson McMullen – American Missionary served refugees relief in Wartime China

Reverend Dr. Robert Johnson McMullen, an American Presbyterian missionary and the founding president of the Hangchow Rotary Club, was instrumental in aiding refugees during wartime China. In 1938, after the Japanese occupation of Hangchow (now Hangzhou) following the 1937 Battle of Shanghai, he led efforts with six other Rotarians and local Red Cross members to assist around 26,000 war refugees. Their relief focused on protecting civilians, especially women and children, by using shelters in hospitals, churches, and schools established by neutral countries like the United States, Britain, and France. British missionary Dr. Stephen Douglas Sturton, Hospital Superintendent and later reviver of the Hangchow Rotary Club post-1945, and Edward Hyers Clayton, head of Wayland Academy, were key partners. Founded in 1932, the Hangchow Rotary Club was the first Mandarin-speaking Rotary chapter in Zhejiang Province’s capital.
