Yen Tsing-Ling (1909–1981), known as the “Father of Taiwan’s Automobile Industry,” was a distinguished entrepreneur, engineer, and political figure. Educated in mechanical engineering at National Tongji University and Technischen Hochschule Berlin, he returned to China in 1931 to oversee mechanical factories. After moving to Taiwan in 1949, Yen and his wife Wu Shun-wen founded Tai-Yuan Textile Company and, in 1953, established Yulon Motor Company, pioneering Taiwan’s automotive manufacturing. Yulon produced Taiwan’s first domestically assembled vehicles and expanded via partnerships with Willys (USA) and Nissan (Japan). Yen also held leadership roles in Rotary organizations, including president of the Taipei Rotary Club (1967–68) and first chairman of the Rotary International Taiwan Association (1973–78). He promoted basketball by founding the Yulon men’s team and chairing national basketball committees. His legacy encompasses industrial growth, sports development, and philanthropy through the Yen Industrial Development Foundation supporting technological research.
