John Louis Marden (1919–1999), CBE, JP, was a prominent British-born businessman and philanthropist in Hong Kong, regarded as one of the last great British taipans. Son of George Ernest Marden, former Shanghai Rotary Club president and founder of G.E. Marden & Co., John continued his family legacy in both business and Rotary service. He chaired Wheelock Marden & Co., Ltd. from 1959 to 1985, overseeing its shift from shipping to property investment and contributing significantly to Hong Kong’s Cross-Harbour Tunnel development. Marden held directorships at HSBC, Dairy Farm, and Hongkong Electric. His leadership ended following a corporate dispute that resulted in the 1985 sale of his family’s interests to Sir Y.K. Pao. An active Rotarian, he was President of the Hong Kong Rotary Club and Governor of Rotary International District 345. He co-founded the Marden Foundation to support education and vocational training, served briefly as an unofficial Legislative Council member in 1971, and was appointed CBE in 1976.
