Yan Ching-Ling (1909–1981), known as the “Father of Taiwan’s Automobile Industry,” was an influential entrepreneur and engineer who founded Yulon Motor Company. Born in Shanghai and educated at National Tongji University and Technischen Hochschule Berlin, Yan moved to Taiwan in 1949, where he established Taiyuan Textile Company. In 1953, he founded Yulon Motor, producing Taiwan’s first domestically assembled jeep by 1956. Through partnerships with U.S. Willys and Japan’s Nissan, Yulon expanded into commercial and passenger vehicles. Yan served as president of the Taipei Rotary Club (1967–1968) and was the inaugural chairman of the Rotary Clubs Association of Taiwan (1973–1978). He also promoted basketball in Taiwan by founding the Yulon men’s team and supporting national sports development. In 1973, he created the Ching-Ling Industrial Development Foundation to foster technological research. Yan’s leadership significantly contributed to Taiwan’s automotive industry and industrial modernization.
