Angus Ivan Ward (1893–1969) was a Canadian-born American diplomat notable for his role as U.S. Consul General in Mukden (now Shenyang, 瀋陽) during the Chinese Civil War. In 1948, as an active member of the Shenyang Rotary Club, Ward and his staff were placed under house arrest by advancing Chinese Communist forces until December 1949. Despite harsh detention and espionage charges seen as unfounded, they were released after U.S. diplomatic efforts and evacuated via the S.S. Lakeland Victory. Ward later served as U.S. Ambassador to Afghanistan (1952–1956), dealing with Cold War challenges and promoting aid to counter Soviet influence. After 31 years in the Foreign Service, he retired in 1956, leaving behind a valuable collection of Russian historical documents on Mongolia and northern China that contributed to regional historical and diplomatic scholarship.
