Li Chaoran (李超然), born January 15, 1910, in Dadaocheng, Taipei, hailed from a distinguished family with significant contributions to Taiwan’s history and economy. His great-grandfather, Li Chunchang (1838–1924), was renowned as the “Father of Taiwan’s Tea Industry” and the “Taiwan Philosopher,” and was the wealthiest man in Hebei and the first Christian in Beitai. Li’s grandfather, Li Jingsheng, was a Taipei State Agreement member and founder of New High Bank, the predecessor of First Bank. His father, Li Yanling, studied in Japan as one of Taiwan’s earliest international students. Li Chaoran graduated from Tamkang High School, studied further in Shanghai and became the first Taiwanese student in Germany at Berlin. Returning to Taiwan around 1930, he worked as a pharmacology researcher at the Central Research Institute of the Taiwan Governor-General’s Office. He later served as Rotary District Governor (DG) in 1982-1983.
