Dr. Claude Marshall Lee (李克樂), an American Episcopal medical missionary, founded Wusih’s first Western-style hospital, St. Andrew’s Hospital (無錫普仁醫院), in 1908, which is now known as Wuxi No. 2 People’s Hospital. Educated at the University of Virginia, he dedicated 40 years to medical service in Wusih County, Jiangsu Province, China, including pioneering surgical operations and establishing the hospital’s nursing school in 1918. Lee also served twice as the founding Vice-President of the Wusih Rotary Club, established first in 1937 and revived in 1947 after wartime interruptions due to the Second Sino-Japanese War and World War II. Despite Japanese occupation and operational challenges, Lee maintained hospital services for the local population until leaving China in 1947 due to his wife’s health. Post-1949 political changes led to the club’s and hospital’s transition under the new government. Lee died in 1967 in Virginia, USA, remembered for his pivotal contributions to medical care and community leadership in early 20th-century Wusih.
