Baen Elmer Lee (1889–1958), a Hangzhou native, was the first Chinese president of Hangchow Christian College (later Zhijiang University). He helped found the Hangchow Rotary Club in 1931, the fifth Rotary Club in China and the first to use Chinese as its working language. Lee represented “University Education” and held degrees from Hangchow Presbyterian College, the University of Chicago, and New York University. He became acting president in 1929 and official president in 1930. Lee led the college through wartime challenges and government changes, including relocation during the Japanese invasion and efforts to gain university status. After the Communist takeover in 1949, Lee was detained due to his religious and political affiliations and died in prison in 1958. The university ceased independent operations by 1952, merging into Zhejiang University, Hangzhou University, and others.
