William Yinson Lee (Shanghai) 李元信(上海)

William Yinson Lee (李元信) (1884–?) was an Australian Chinese businessman and philanthropist active in Shanghai from 1924. Born in Sydney to a Guangdong family, he was educated in Australia and Hong Kong, working in commerce across Australia, Hong Kong, and Guangzhou. In Shanghai, Lee served as director of the Rotary Club of Shanghai (1926–1930) and was founding president of the Chinese Mission to Lepers (1926–1933), an organization combatting leprosy through medical aid and advocacy. He also founded the Shanghai Y’s Men’s Club, led clinics, and held leadership roles in various social, charitable, and commercial institutions, including insurance and cultural associations. Lee was recognized for his civic work, promoting the Chinese flag’s recognition in Australia during wartime and supporting child welfare and medical care efforts in Shanghai.
