Yew Mi-Kien (游彌堅, 1897-1971), a pioneering Taiwanese politician, educator, and publisher, is renowned as the “Father of Taiwan Tourism.” He served as Taipei’s second appointed mayor (1946-1950) and contributed greatly to Taiwan’s postwar recovery, cultural revival, and educational reform. A key figure in Rotary history, Yew was an original member of the Rotary Club of Taipei and founded the Taipei West Rotary Club in 1954, the first club worldwide to conduct meetings in the local Taiwanese dialect, Tai-gi. He was also the 7th Governor of Rotary International District 345 (1966-1967), which covered Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau. Yew’s leadership in promoting tourism began during his mayoralty, leading to the founding of the Taiwan Visitors Association in 1956, which he chaired for 15 years. His diplomatic and academic career spanned China, Japan, France, and Taiwan. Yew played a vital role in Taiwan’s cultural and tourism development until his death in 1971.
