Yew Mi-Kien (Taipei West) 游彌堅(臺北西區)

Yew Mi-Kien (1897–1971), originally You Bai, was a Taiwanese politician and pioneer of Taiwan’s tourism industry. Born in Taipei under Japanese rule, he studied in Japan and China. To avoid Japanese surveillance, he changed his name after moving to Beiping (now Beijing), where he aided Chinese efforts at the League of Nations against Japanese aggression in the 1930s. Serving as Taipei’s second mayor (1946–1950), Yew revitalized Rotary International in Taiwan and founded the Taipei West District Rotary Club in 1954 as its first president. Known as the “father of Taiwan’s tourism industry,” he led the Taiwan Tourism Association from 1956 for over ten years, promoting Taiwan’s natural and cultural assets to enhance tourism and foreign exchange. He passed away in Taipei in 1971, leaving a lasting legacy in Taiwan’s tourism and civic history.
