Shi-Zhen Lin (林士珍), born on October 17, 1928, in Taichung, Taiwan, was a pioneering plant pathologist. Graduating from Provincial Agricultural College (now National Chung Hsing University), he earned a master’s degree in plant pathology from the University of Tokyo. Lin was the first Taiwanese scholar to identify Mycoplasma as the cause of sugarcane white leaf disease, overturning the previous belief that it was viral. His research protected nearly 4,000 hectares of sugarcane fields and saved the industry substantial losses. Lin held academic and research positions, including associate professor at Chinese Culture University and researcher at the Taiwan Sugar Research Institute. He was also active in Rotary International, serving as District Governor and board member, and promoting Taiwan–Japan relations through Rotary. Lin passed away on May 28, 2022, at age 95, leaving a legacy of scientific innovation and community service.
