Dr. Henry K. Chang (1888–1977), an ethnic Cantonese diplomat from the Republic of China, played a significant role internationally throughout the early to mid-20th century. Educated in Europe and the U.S., he earned a law degree from the University of Pennsylvania and received an honorary Doctor of Laws from the University of Southern California. Chang joined the Rotary Club of Tientsin in 1924 and served as its president from 1925 to 1926. His diplomatic service included posts as Consul General in San Francisco and New York, Chinese Minister to Chile (1933–1941), Director of the American Department in Chongqing’s Foreign Ministry during WWII (1941–1943), Minister to Portugal (1943–1946) where he advocated for China’s sovereignty over Macau, and Ambassador to the Netherlands after the war. Son of Chang Yin-Tang, a Qing and Republican-era minister to the U.S., Henry Chang retired in 1950 after the founding of the People’s Republic of China, emigrating to the U.S. He was honored by Chile, Portugal, and the Netherlands and died in New Rochelle, New York, in 1977.
