Henry George Wandesforde Woodhead (1883–1959), CBE, was a prominent British journalist and editor in early 20th-century China. Arriving in China in 1902, he worked for the North China Daily News and later edited the Peking and Tientsin Times from 1911 to 1930. Woodhead founded the China Year Book and was a founding member and president (1924–1925) of the Rotary Club of Tientsin (天津), one of China’s earliest Rotary clubs. Known for his strong British imperial stance, he opposed ending extraterritorial rights in China and criticized reforms and foreign policies like America’s Open Door policy. Woodhead actively contributed to Tianjin’s civic and volunteer life during World War I and was recognized as a leading expert on Far Eastern affairs through his extensive writings. He also held editorial roles in Shanghai before passing away in 1959.
