Major General William Durward Connor (1874–1960) was a prominent U.S. Army officer and civil engineer known for his leadership as Commanding General of U.S. Forces in China from 1923 to 1926. A West Point graduate ranked first in his class of 1897, Connor served with distinction in the Spanish-American War, Philippine Insurrection, and World War I, earning two Silver Stars and the Distinguished Service Medal. After World War I, he played key roles in Army engineering, logistics, and chaired the Panama Canal Commission. Promoted to Major General, he later commanded the 2nd Infantry Division and the Army War College before serving as Superintendent of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point from 1932 to 1938. Recalled during World War II, Connor chaired the War Department Construction Advisory Committee. He died in Washington, D.C., and was buried at West Point, receiving multiple U.S. and foreign military honors during his career.
