The Hong Kong Volunteer Defence Corps (香港義勇防衛軍團), a multi-ethnic militia unit, played a crucial role in defending British Hong Kong during the 1941 Battle of Hong Kong against Japan. Approximately 2,200 volunteers, including Chinese, British, Portuguese, and others, fought in infantry, artillery, machine gun, and specialized units such as the Hughes Group. Among them, three Rotarians served as officers: Major Edward Cock (谷克少校), Lt. Colonel Eric John Reinhold Mitchell (密轍爾中校), and Lt. Colonel Reginald David Walker (獲嘉中校). Cock contributed engineering expertise and was interned during Japanese occupation. Mitchell, second-in-command during the battle, survived POW captivity, rebuilt the Rotary Club postwar, and was its 1946-1947 president. Walker led demolition and defense operations, was wounded in combat, and later interned. The HKVDC was reformed postwar as the Royal Hong Kong Regiment until disbandment in 1995. These Rotarians exemplified leadership and service during war and peace in colonial Hong Kong.
