A Century of Rotary – The History of 100 Years 1905-2005
ENG
Rotary International was founded in 1905 by Paul Harris in Chicago as a fellowship of professionals devoted to ethical business and community service. It expanded rapidly across the US and internationally, introducing youth and ethical programs. Surviving challenges like the Great Depression and World War II, Rotary focused on relief efforts and club rebuilding despite persecution in Europe. After the war, Rotary supported the founding of the United Nations and broadened its humanitarian service. From the 1960s to 1980s, it launched youth initiatives such as Interact, Rotaract, and RYLA, and expanded international programs like World Community Service and Group Study Exchange. The Polio Plus campaign, started in 1985, underscored Rotary’s dedication to global health. By its 100th anniversary in 2005, Rotary had grown into a diverse worldwide organization with over one million members, including women since 1987, active in 159 countries, committed to peace, education, disease eradication, and international understanding.
