Major John Kirk Singlaub (1921-2022) was a distinguished U.S. Army officer and intelligence operative, notable for his role in China and Asia during and after World War II. Stationed in Mukden (Shenyang) from 1946 to 1948 with the Strategic Services Unit, Singlaub reported on the Chinese Civil War and became a charter member of the Shenyang Rotary Club in 1948. He led daring missions such as the rescue of Allied prisoners on Hainan Island in 1945 and served in critical roles throughout World War II, Korea, and Vietnam, including commanding MACV-SOG. Singlaub was a founding CIA member and later engaged in anti-Communist activism during the Cold War, co-founding the Western Goals Foundation and the U.S. chapter of the World Anti-Communist League. His military career ended controversially after opposing President Carter’s troop withdrawal plans in Korea. He was highly decorated, honored in the Ranger Hall of Fame, and remembered as a patriot and special operations legend.
