Dr. Claude Marshall Lee (1882–1967), an American Episcopal medical missionary, founded St. Andrew’s Hospital in Wusih (now Wuxi), Jiangsu Province, in 1908, marking the first Western medical institution there. Under his leadership, the hospital expanded to serve over 20,000 patients annually, incorporating surgical services and nursing education. Lee co-founded the Wusih Rotary Club and served as its vice-president in 1937 and 1947. Despite Japanese occupation and personal internment during World War II, he remained to provide medical care, briefly relocating to the U.S. in 1942. After the war, he returned to revive both the hospital and the Rotary Club, leaving China in 1947 due to his wife’s health. St. Andrew’s Hospital later became Wuxi No. 2 People’s Hospital. Lee was named an honorary citizen of Wuxi for his 40 years of service and died in Virginia, USA, in 1967.
