Hong Kong Rotarian Chiefs of St. John Ambulance Organization

The Rotary Club of Hong Kong (香港扶輪社) has been home to eight volunteer chiefs of the Hong Kong St. John Ambulance Organization (香港聖約翰救護機構), five of whom also served as Rotary International officers. The St. John Ambulance Association was established in Hong Kong in 1884 as part of the Order of Saint John, a royal order formed in 1888 to provide medical aid and humanitarian services. The Ambulance Brigade was founded in 1916 to formalize emergency response operations. Throughout its history, the Brigade played significant roles during World War II, post-war recovery, and disasters like the 1953 Shek Kip Mei fire. The organization’s governance evolved with the establishment of the Council of the Order of St. John in Hong Kong in 1949 and its incorporation in 1951, transitioning post-1997 under Hong Kong’s sovereignty. Notable Rotarian leaders include Abbas Din el Arculli (夏高理), Kenneth Fung Ping-Fan (馮秉芬), George Choa Wing-Sien (蔡永善), and others who contributed to both Rotary and St. John Ambulance leadership. The historic Chau Yue Teng Building (周雨亭樓), opened in 1935, remains a key site for the Brigade’s headquarters.

O Rotary Club de Hong Kong (香港扶輪社) foi a casa de oito chefes voluntários da Organização St. John Ambulance de Hong Kong (香港聖約翰救護機構), cinco dos quais também serviram como dirigentes do Rotary International. A Associação St. John Ambulance foi fundada em Hong Kong em 1884 como parte da Ordem de São João, uma ordem real criada em 1888 para prestar auxílio médico e serviços humanitários. A Brigada Ambulância foi criada em 1916 para formalizar as operações de resposta a emergências. Ao longo da história, a Brigada desempenhou papéis importantes durante a Segunda Guerra Mundial, a recuperação pós-guerra e desastres como o incêndio de Shek Kip Mei em 1953.
