Dr. Arthur W. Woo (胡惠德, 1888-1964), a distinguished obstetrician, gynecologist, and medical missionary, played a pivotal role in rejuvenating the Hong Kong Rotary Club (香港扶輪社) after World War II in 1945. A charter member in 1930 and president in 1940-1941, he led efforts to restart the Club amid postwar chaos, securing membership and funds. In 1947, Woo expanded Rotary presence by establishing the Macau Rotary Club (澳門扶輪社) and later assisting the Kowloon Rotary Club (九龍扶輪社) in 1948. Appointed by Rotary International president Frank E. Spain in 1951 as Administrative Advisor, Woo supervised seven clubs across Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, and mainland China. Beyond Rotary, Woo was a noted medical educator, hospital director, and community leader. He notably supported the Fanling Babies’ Home orphanage during the war, ensuring its survival. He earned honors including O.B.E. (1954) and Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons (1949), leaving a lasting legacy in both medicine and service in the region.
