Two provisional clubs in China – Shanghai & Beijing – get charters

In May 2006, Rotary International’s Immediate Past President Carl Wilhelm Stenhammar recognized the expansion of Rotary service in mainland China by engaging with the provisional Rotary clubs of Beijing and Shanghai. At the Rotary International Board’s request, Christopher Bo Bramsen, a diplomat and member of the Rotary Club of Kobenhavn, was appointed as special representative to China for a three-year term ending in June 2008. Bramsen’s duties included facilitating official registration of Rotary clubs with Chinese authorities, offering guidance, and supporting district training and project coordination. Rotary has a longstanding commitment to humanitarian work in China, contributing $22 million to polio eradication and nearly $1 million in grants through The Rotary Foundation. Recently approved grants include a $150,000 Matching Grant for hepatitis B immunization and a $300,000 3-H Grant associated with the Beijing club, signaling Rotary’s growing presence and influence in China.
