Two Chinese Governors Reported the 81st District to The Annual Rotary

In February 1935, Rotary Clubs from the Republic of China, Hong Kong, and the Philippine Islands petitioned Rotary International to form the 81st District, officially established on October 1, 1935, with 15 clubs. Dr. Chengting Thomas Wang of Shanghai Rotary Club was the first governor until 1936, when he resigned to become Ambassador to the U.S., succeeded by Dr. Fong Foo-Sec. Both governors reported on Rotary activities in China at the 1935 and 1936 annual conventions, highlighting Rotary’s growth and mission to promote service and international peace amid diverse cultural and geographic challenges. By 1937, the district grew to 31 clubs, leading to the creation of three new districts (96th, 97th, and 98th) in China. Political upheavals and World War II caused Rotary’s operations in mainland China to cease by 1952, until a revival in the 21st century.
