Birth of the first ever Rotary District in China

On October 1, 1935, the first Rotary International District in China, the 81st District, was established, covering clubs in the Republic of China, Hong Kong, and the Philippine Islands. Rotary’s presence in China began in 1919 with the Shanghai club, expanding to Tianjin, Beijing, and other treaty ports, reaching 15 clubs by 1935. In February 1935, a key meeting aboard the SS President Coolidge with Rotary International President Robert L. Hill led to the district’s formation. Dr. Chengting T. Wang (王承廷) of Shanghai, a Yale-educated diplomat, was appointed the inaugural District Governor. The first district conference took place in April 1936 in Shanghai, with delegates from China, Hong Kong, and the Philippines. This event marked a major milestone in Rotary’s organizational development and cooperation across East Asia.

Em 1º de outubro de 1935, foi criado o primeiro Distrito Internacional Rotary na China, o 81º Distrito, abrangendo clubes na República da China, Hong Kong e nas Filipinas. A presença do Rotary na China iniciou-se em 1919 com o clube de Xangai, expandindo para Tianjin, Pequim e outros portos de tratado, totalizando 15 clubes em 1935. Em fevereiro de 1935, uma reunião importante a bordo do SS President Coolidge com o presidente do Rotary Internacional, Robert L. Hill, resultou na criação do distrito. O Dr. Chengting T. Wang (王承廷), diplomata e formado em Yale, foi nomeado primeiro Governador do Distrito. A primeira conferência do distrito ocorreu em abril de 1936 em Xangai, com delegados da China, Hong Kong e Filipinas. Esse evento marcou um avanço significativo na organização e cooperação do Rotary no Leste Asiático.
