Tributes to Paul P. Harris

In February 1935, Paul P. Harris, founder of Rotary International, and President Robert L. Hill visited Shanghai and Hong Kong while en route to the 5th Pacific Regional Rotary Conference in Manila, which was originally planned for Shanghai but relocated due to local conditions. Traveling aboard the ocean liner President Coolidge via Honolulu and Japan, Harris planted a “Tree of Friendship” in Shanghai’s Kiaochow Road Park and met with local Rotary leaders, including Dr. Fong Foo-Sec and Percy Chu. The delegation engaged with Rotarians from various Chinese cities discussing club organization. In Hong Kong, the Hong Kong Rotary Club hosted the group, leading to the creation of Rotary District 81 on October 1, 1935, covering clubs in China, Hong Kong, and the Philippines, with Dr. Chengting T. Wang as its first governor.
