Dr. Chengting Thomas Wang (1882–1961) was a notable Republic of China diplomat and Rotary International leader. Serving as Ambassador to the United States from 1936 to 1938, he helped establish Twin Oaks in Washington, D.C., as the official ambassadorial residence. Originally built in 1888 and once owned by Alexander Graham Bell’s family, Twin Oaks was leased by Wang in 1937 to support embassy functions. Wang was also the first governor of Rotary’s 81st District, covering clubs in China, Hong Kong, and the Philippines. After his tenure, Twin Oaks housed nine more Chinese ambassadors until the 1970s. Following U.S. recognition of the People’s Republic of China in 1979, the property transferred to a nonprofit but was reacquired by Taiwan in 1982. Today, this historic Georgian mansion on 18.24 acres serves as Taiwan’s unofficial diplomatic residence and event site, symbolizing ongoing ties despite the lack of formal embassy status.
