Tong Yuen-Chan (1861–1921), from Guangdong Province, was the first Chinese Rotarian, joining the Shanghai Rotary Club in 1919 as its first Chinese active member and serving as treasurer. A pioneer in China’s telegraph industry, he studied in the United States before rising to director-general of the Republic of China’s Telegraph Administration. Tong held key governmental roles during the late Qing and early Republic periods, mediating Sino-foreign business disputes and advancing modernization. After 1913, he shifted to banking and social activism, founding schools and leading the Red Cross Society of China as chairman from 1919. He also helped establish the Boy Scouts Federation of China as vice-president. Tong died in Shanghai in 1921, remembered as a respected leader, “Father of Students,” and a lifelong advocate for public service and Sino-Western cultural integration.

Pioneiro na indústria telegráfica da China, estudou nos Estados Unidos antes de ascender a diretor-geral da Administração de Telégrafos da República da China. Tong ocupou papéis governamentais importantes durante o final da dinastia Qing e início da República, mediando disputas comerciais sino-extrangeiras e promovendo a modernização. Após 1913, dedicou-se à banca e ativismo social, fundando escolas e liderando a Sociedade da Cruz Vermelha da China como presidente a partir de 1919. Tong faleceu em Xangai em 1921, lembrado como líder respeitado, “Pai dos Estudantes” e defensor vitalício do serviço público e da integração cultural sino-ocidental.

唐元湛（1861–1921），广东省人，是首位中国籍扶轮社会员，1919年加入上海扶轮社，成为首位华人活跃会员并担任财务主管。他是中国电报事业的先驱，曾赴美留学，回国后历任电报操作员至电报管理局局长。唐元湛在晚清和民国初期担任关键政府职务，调解中外商业纠纷，推动现代化进程。1913年后转向银行业和社会公益，创办学校并于1919年任中国红十字会主席。他也是中国童子军联合会的创始人兼副会长。1921年唐元湛在上海去世，被尊为受人敬仰的领导者和“学生之父”，终身致力于公共服务及中西文化融合。
