The first ever Rotary District Conference held in Tientsin 1948

The Rotary International District 98 Conference was first held in Tientsin (now Tianjin), China, on March 5–6, 1948, at The Astor Hotel. District 98, established in 1937, covered northern provinces such as Hebei, Henan, Shandong, Shanxi, Shaanxi, and Gansu. Rotary activities faced significant disruptions during the Second Sino-Japanese War and World War II, including the death of District Director Dr. Fong Foo-Sec in 1938 and challenges under Japanese occupation. After Japan’s 1945 defeat, Dr. Chengting Thomas Wang served as Administrative Advisor, preserving Rotary ties. The 1948 conference, led by District Director C.C. Lin and hosted by the Tientsin Rotary Club, drew over 100 Rotarians and guests, including Tientsin Mayor Du Jian Shi. The event included speeches, fundraising for blindness prevention, officer elections, and a keynote by Dr. Wang on Rotary’s four avenues of service. The conference reaffirmed Rotary’s commitment to friendship, service, and peace during China’s turbulent era.

A Conferência do Distrito 98 do Rotary International foi realizada pela primeira vez em Tientsin (atual Tianjin), China, nos dias 5 e 6 de março de 1948, no Hotel Astor. O Distrito 98, estabelecido em 1937, abrangia as províncias do norte como Hebei, Henan, Shandong, Shanxi, Shaanxi e Gansu. As atividades do Rotary enfrentaram grandes interrupções durante a Segunda Guerra Sino-Japonesa e a Segunda Guerra Mundial, incluindo a morte do Diretor do Distrito, Dr. Fong Foo-Sec, em 1938, e desafios sob a ocupação japonesa. Após a derrota do Japão em 1945, o Dr. Chengting Thomas Wang atuou como Conselheiro Administrativo, preservando os vínculos do Rotary. A conferência de 1948, liderada pelo Diretor do Distrito C.C.
