Dr. Yen Te-Ching (1878–1942) was a pioneering Chinese railway engineer and Rotary International leader. Born in Shanghai, he was the first Chinese to earn an engineering graduate degree from Lehigh University in 1901. Yen significantly contributed to the Peking-Kalgan Railway, including tunnel construction under the Great Wall, and held senior posts in China’s communications and railway ministries during the Qing and Republican eras. After World War I, he led efforts to regain Chinese control of the Jiaoji Railway from Japan, reducing China’s payment obligations and chairing the overseeing commission. In 1933, he directed the building of China’s earliest Yangtze train ferry at Nanking. As a founding member of the Chinese Institute of Engineers, two-time Rotary club president in Peking and Nanking, and Rotary International District Governor (1938–40), he became the second Chinese Rotary International Director (1941–42). He died in occupied Shanghai in 1942 at age 64.
