The Birth of the First Mongolian Speaking Rotary Club

In January 2015, Rotary marked 20 years of presence in Mongolia, originating with the Rotary Club of Khuree, the country’s first Mongolian-speaking club and second overall. Officially joining Rotary International on February 27, 2002, as the 50th club of District 3450, Khuree was named after the historic title of Mongolia’s capital, Ulaanbaatar. The city’s names reflect its rich history, transitioning from Ikh Khüree and Bogdiin Khüree before adopting “Ulaanbaatar” (meaning “Red Hero”) in 1924. Following Mongolia’s inclusion in District 3450 in 2000—which also included clubs from Hong Kong and Macau—the Khuree Club was formed. Although initial attempts to create more clubs faced difficulties, Rotary expanded in Ulaanbaatar through youth programs like Interact and Rotaract. A significant milestone was the November 2000 visit of Rotary International leaders, including President-Elect Richard D. King, who met with local members and communities.
