The Shanghai West Rotary Club (滬西扶輪社) was founded in 1948 as a Chinese-speaking Rotary Club in Shanghai, following earlier efforts in the 1930s led by Dr. Chengting T. Wang and District Governor Dr. Fong Foo-Sec to create a club for Chinese businessmen excluded by language barriers. Although Rotary International approved the idea in 1937, the Second Sino-Japanese War and Japanese occupation halted progress, leading to the suspension of Rotary activities and the termination of the Shanghai Rotary Club in 1943. After World War II, the Shanghai Rotary Club was reestablished in 1946 and subsequently sponsored the Shanghai West Rotary Club in 1948. The club met at the Chinese YMCA of Shanghai, conducted activities in Mandarin, and had 23 native Chinese charter members, including founding President James Kofei Shen, a notable surgeon and educator. Despite early achievements, the club ceased operations in 1952 following the establishment of the People’s Republic of China in 1949, with some members continuing Rotary work later in Hong Kong.
