The Canton Rotary Club (廣州扶輪社) was founded in late 1931 in Guangzhou, then the capital of Guangdong Province in the Republic of China. Sparked by James Wheeler Davidson’s 1930 visit promoting Rotary International in East Asia, it was officially chartered on April 25, 1932, as the fourth Rotary club in China. Key founders included Dr. James M. Henry of Lingnan University and George Ashmore Fitch from the Shanghai Rotary Club, which sponsored the new club. The inaugural meeting on December 15, 1931, gathered 29 charter members and Rotary officials. Meetings were held at Hotel Asia and aboard steamships of the Hong Kong, Canton & Macao Steamboat Company, maintaining close ties with the Hong Kong Rotary Club. The Canton Rotary Club operated until 1950 when political changes forced its closure. Its establishment highlighted Guangzhou’s role as a commercial hub and its desire for international friendship and community service.
