Canton and Swatow – Rotary Clubs in the former Kwangtung Province

Kwangtung Province, now Guangdong Province, was an administrative region in the Republic of China from 1911 to 1949 with its capital at Canton (Guangzhou). Swatow (modern Shantou) was opened as a foreign trading port in 1860. During the 1930s, two Rotary clubs were established amid international trade: the Canton Rotary Club in 1932 and the Swatow Rotary Club in 1936. Both clubs were affiliated with Rotary International but ceased operations in December 1950 due to political campaigns suppressing anti-government activities. The Canton club shared its name with other Rotary clubs globally, including active branches in the United States. The early closure of these clubs reflected the significant political and social upheavals in China at that time.
