Over more than ten years, Rotary Taiwan collaborated with government agencies and medical organizations to eradicate Hepatitis C nationwide. Starting with a $500,000 Global Grant in 2014–15 focused on liver disease, the initiative included broad community screening, education, and rural medical support. Between 2015 and 2026, 57 projects were completed with over $4.1 million invested and more than 18,000 volunteer hours contributed. Diagnosis and treatment rates for Hepatitis C rose above 90%, exceeding WHO standards. Major successes included engaging local governments in Yunlin and Changhua Counties and addressing transmission in prisons. This public-private partnership effectively combined government policy, medical expertise, and Rotary’s community mobilization into a sustainable prevention model. Taiwan’s achievement, now submitted for WHO certification, places it among leading countries in Hepatitis C elimination and provides a replicable framework for global public health efforts.

Rotary Taiwan Celebrates a Decade of Hepatitis C Elimination Efforts

Taipei, March 31, 2026 — Rotary Taiwan Headquarters, together with the Taiwan Rotary Publishing and Internet Information Association, held a landmark seminar and press conference at NTU Hospital to highlight ten years of collaborative efforts in Hepatitis C prevention and treatment.

With participation from government leaders, medical experts, and Rotary members—including former Rotary International President Gary Huang—the event celebrated the successful partnership between Rotary, Taiwan’s Health Promotion Administration, and local medical institutions. This collaboration has transformed Taiwan from a high-risk “Island of Liver Disease” to a global model for Hepatitis C elimination.

Over the past decade, Rotary Taiwan has mobilized over 18,000 volunteer hours and $4.1 million USD in support of 57 community-based projects, including widespread screening, health education, rural medical outreach, and provision of medical equipment. These initiatives have contributed to more than 7.5 million people being screened, achieving a diagnosis and treatment rate exceeding 90%, surpassing the World Health Organization’s “Gold Standard.”

Key breakthroughs included engagement in Yunlin and Changhua counties and the integration of prison populations into screening programs, ensuring no gaps in nationwide prevention efforts.

“Rotary’s motto, ‘Service Above Self,’ reflects our commitment to sustainable impact,” said Hong Qinghui, Rotary Foundation trustee. “Through consistent collaboration with the government and medical community, we have created a model that can be replicated worldwide.”

Taiwan’s Hepatitis C elimination program has become a global benchmark alongside Iceland, Australia, and Egypt, demonstrating the power of coordinated public-private efforts to achieve lasting public health success.
