Dr. the Honourable Sir Wilfrid Thomas Southorn (1879–1957) was a distinguished British colonial administrator who served in Ceylon, Hong Kong, and The Gambia. Educated at Warwick School and Oxford, he joined the Ceylon Civil Service in 1903 and became Principal Assistant Colonial Secretary by 1920. From 1925 to 1936, Southorn was Colonial Secretary of Hong Kong and acted as Administrator three times. He later served as Governor of The Gambia from 1936 to 1942. In 1921, he married author Bella Sidney Woolf, active in Hong Kong community service and honored with an OBE in 1935. The Southorn Playground in Wan Chai, Hong Kong—named in his honor in 1934—was initiated by the Rotary Club to provide children’s recreational facilities and remains a prominent recreational area. Southorn was knighted KBE (1933) and KCMG (1938) and received an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from the University of Hong Kong in 1936.
