Dr. The Honourable Sir Shouson Chow (周壽臣爵士) (1861–1959) was the first Chinese Knight Bachelor and an influential Rotarian in the Rotary Club of Hong Kong, joining as an active member during the Club’s early decades after its 1930 founding. Educated in the U.S. as one of the Qing Dynasty’s Chinese Educational Mission students, he held high positions in the Qing government including Commissioner of the Peking-Mukden Railway, before retiring to Hong Kong. There, he became a distinguished businessman, co-founding the Bank of East Asia and serving on boards of major companies and community organizations. As a key Chinese leader, Chow served as unofficial member of the Sanitary Board, Legislative Council (1921-1931), and Executive Council (appointed 1926), bridging the colonial government and Chinese community. Knighted by King George V in 1926, he remained influential through WWII and postwar Hong Kong. His legacy includes Shouson Hill (壽臣山), named in his honor, reflecting his lifelong service in politics, business, and charity.
