Hong Kong Rotary Club initiated the establishment of Southorn Playground

Southorn Playground (修頓遊樂場) in Wan Chai, Hong Kong, was established in 1931 as a service project led by the Rotary Club of Hong Kong (香港扶輪社) shortly after its founding in December 1930. The playground, spanning approximately 96,000 square feet, opened on 11 July 1934 as the Wan Chai Children’s Playground and was later renamed to honor Sir Wilfrid Thomas Southorn (修頓爵士), Colonial Secretary from 1925-1936, who championed children’s welfare and community recreation during rapid urbanization. The site was reclaimed land from Victoria Harbour under the 1920s Praya East Reclamation Scheme. The Rotary Club funded its construction, with the Children’s Playground Association (兒童遊樂場協會) formed in 1933 to manage it. The playground has evolved into a key public sports and recreation hub with basketball courts, a soccer pitch, and children’s facilities. It also has historical significance as a wartime air raid shelter site and a venue for civic events, adapting continuously to community needs through decades.

O Southorn Playground (修頓遊樂場) em Wan Chai, Hong Kong, foi criado em 1931 como um projeto liderado pelo Rotary Club de Hong Kong (香港扶輪社), pouco depois da sua fundação em dezembro de 1930. O parque, com cerca de 8.900 metros quadrados, foi inaugurado em 11 de julho de 1934 como Wan Chai Children’s Playground, renomeado posteriormente em homenagem a Sir Wilfrid Thomas Southorn (修頓爵士), Secretário Colonial entre 1925 e 1936, um defensor do bem-estar infantil e da recreação comunitária durante a urbanização acelerada.
