Shanghai Rotary Club – Report for Period 1941-1945 during the Pacific War

The Shanghai Rotary Club, founded in 1919 within the International Settlement, suspended normal activities from 1941 to 1945 due to the Pacific War and Japanese occupation. Before the war, its diverse membership included Americans, British, Chinese, French, and Japanese. After Japan’s Pearl Harbor attack in December 1941, official meetings halted but informal gatherings and sporadic secretariat work continued, supported by Rotarian T. J. Holt. Many Allied members were interned or repatriated during the conflict. Following Japan’s surrender, the Club held informal meetings in September 1945 and formally resumed in November, retaining membership classifications to support postwar recovery. It preserved its charter and records while preparing for gradual reinstatement with Rotary International amid financial and logistical hardships. This report was signed by President William Z. L. Sung and Honorary Secretary E. S. Thellefsen in December 1945.
