The Shanghai Concert Hall, originally the Nanking Theatre built in 1930 at Yan’an Road and South Tibet Road in Shanghai’s Huangpu District, was designed by architect and Shanghai Rotary Club member Robert Fan. Initially a cinema showing American films, it was renamed Beijing Cinema in 1949 and transformed into a concert hall renowned for its acoustics in 1959. The building was moved in 2007 for the Yan’an Elevated Road project and reopened in 2008 as a protected national cultural relic. During the Pacific War (1941–1945), the Nanking Theatre served as the wartime hub for the Shanghai Rotary Club, which operated under Japanese occupation, coordinated relief efforts, and maintained secretarial tasks there. Robert Fan (1893–1979), a University of Pennsylvania-trained architect and influential Shanghai Rotarian, also designed the YMCA Building in Shanghai and notable projects in Hong Kong, evolving from Beaux-Arts to modernist architecture before relocating to Hong Kong in 1949.
