The Birth of Shanghai West Rotary Club (滬西扶輪社) in 1948 and its final months

The Rotary Club of Shanghai West (滬西扶輪社) was founded in 1948 amid the postwar transitional period in Shanghai. It was a Chinese-speaking club sponsored by the Shanghai Rotary Club to extend Rotary service following the loss of foreign settlements after World War II. The club’s 23 charter members were prominent local professionals and businessmen. However, the escalating Chinese Civil War, culminating in the Communist victory and the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 1949, destabilized the area. Many members emigrated to Taiwan or Hong Kong and continued Rotary activities there. Despite efforts to maintain operations, the Shanghai West club ceased functioning as political pressures increased. Rotary International officially terminated the club along with the last remaining Rotary clubs in China by 1952. This brief but significant club reflects the challenges faced during a pivotal era of Chinese history when Rotary sought to adapt to rapidly changing political and social landscapes.

Foi um clube de língua chinesa patrocinado pelo Rotary Club de Xangai para expandir o serviço do Rotary após a perda dos assentamentos estrangeiros após a Segunda Guerra Mundial. Os 23 membros fundadores eram profissionais e empresários locais de destaque. Contudo, a escalada da Guerra Civil Chinesa, culminando na vitória comunista e na fundação da República Popular da China em 1949, desestabilizou a região. Muitos membros emigraram para Taiwan ou Hong Kong, continuando as atividades do Rotary nesses locais.
