Rotary International Presidential Themes

Rotary International began adopting annual presidential themes in 1949-50 with President Percy C. Hodgson, who set four key objectives for his term. In 1953-54, President Joaquin Serratosa Cibils introduced the idea of a concise, memorable theme, a tradition maintained since then. These themes reflect each president’s vision and priorities, including Charles G. Tennent’s 1957-58 call to “Enlist – Extend – Explore – Serve” and Carl P. Miller’s 1963-64 “Meeting Rotary’s Challenge in the Space Age.” Themes act as motivational slogans, featured on logos and merchandise, increasing Rotary’s global visibility. Successful themes embody the president’s character while ensuring linguistic clarity and cultural neutrality. A chronological listing from 1957 to 2018 shows diverse leaders emphasizing various aspects of service, from John F. Germ’s 2016-17 “Rotary Serving Humanity” to Ian H. S.
