Rotarian’s wife aids Hong Kong refugee children

Aileen Meier, wife of Rotarian John J. Meier from the Rotary Club of Columbia City, Indiana, volunteered at the Kai Tak North refugee camp in Hong Kong from August 11 to September 5, 1980. Though trained as a medical technologist, she focused on caring for about 40 Vietnamese refugee children aged six months to three years at a newly established daycare center. These children, survivors of the Vietnamese “boat people” crisis after the Vietnam War, were initially frightened and unfamiliar with toys and separation from caregivers. Assisted by Vietnamese staff and an English-speaking pediatric nurse, Meier helped the children adjust through patient care. Her emotionally rewarding experience highlights the vital humanitarian role Rotary families played in supporting refugee populations under challenging conditions.
